Benjamin Koppel & Miroslav Vitous - The Poetic Principle (CD)
The album title The Poetic Principle stems from the Edgar Allen Poe essay by the same title. Here Poe describes what is essential for the poem: it must be precise, focused and intense.
With Poe and this poetical principle as the foundation for the musical idea, Benjamin Koppel has laid out some basic compositional lines which are interpreted by the bass player Miroslav Vitous (CZ) - one of the founding members of the renowned Jazz fusion band Weather Report - in cooperation with Danish top Jazz artists such as 2 x Koppel, Pasborg, Dahl, Andersson and Andersen. Together they set out on a collective course towards a higher time and being.
The music of The Poetic Principle suspends all fixed points and the lyrical structures will definitely entice the listener. On the album, however one will also find more experimenting quartet tracks, where two double basses, percussion and a tubax (a cross-over instrument between the baritone saxophone and the tuba) elevates the music into another dimension. This connection between something beautiful and poetic as well as the challenging and different is also reflected in the track titles, which all refer to essays and short stories by Edgar Allen Poe.
