Sax and the City
Atmospheric and well-played jazz-pop for autumn drink evenings
With the smooth jazz release Sax and the City from pop craftsman Jan Rørdam and saxophone icon Benjamin Koppel, you’re in for a cozy cocktail vibe in the big city.
Melodic and pop-infused jazz-music – perfect for listening, partying, and enjoying good company. That's what Sax and the City is all about. With its release on October 15, 2010, through Cowbell Music, Jan Rørdam and Benjamin Koppel have realized a long-cherished dream: to create a smooth jazz-pop album with the saxophone in the spotlight and great melodies at its core. This comes with a Nordic touch, as opposed to the overproduced American sound, being recorded in the good old-fashioned way – live in the studio with a band.
The album is primarily instrumental, making it the perfect soundtrack for lovely autumn afternoons, post-work drinks, and cozy moments with friends, with the city's skyline in the background and a Cosmopolitan in hand. Rørdam and Koppel were inspired by the urban vibe captured in the TV series Sex & the City.
Jan Rørdam, with his usual jazz-pop flair, composed most of the album's music, while Benjamin Koppel weaves in the saxophone in only the way he can. His saxophone leads the melodies, much like in Moonjam’s smooth jazz style. The genre on Sax & the City is also pop, melodic, and jazzy – Smooth Jazz, a genre also known as Soft Adult Contemporary, which emerged in the 1980s in Los Angeles and is today more popular than ever in the USA.
While the album is primarily instrumental, vocal delights sneak in here and there, featuring guest performances by singers Søren Sko, Aske Jacobi, and Marie Carmen Koppel.
Line up
Benjamin Koppel - alto sax and soprano sax
Jan Rørdam - guitars, ukulele, mandolin, bass, keyboards, programming
and vocal
Steen Rasmussen - Fender Rhodes, organ and vintage keyboards
Dan Rasmussen - bass
Klaus Menzer - drums
